Q magazine double spread page analysis

This is a double spread page in the Q magazine featuring Lady Gaga. First of all there are two things that immediately grab the readers attention:

  1. The picture of Lady Gaga - the black and white medium close up shot of Lady Gaga takes the whole page and attracts audience, especially male. The picture looks quite sexual as she is looking straight at the camera making eye contact with the person holding the magazine and her make up highlights the eyes creating the "smoky eye" seductive look. Her mouth is slightly opened as if she's about to speak and she seems to be wearing nothing except the necklace and make up. However, the picture is decent and not vulgar as Lady Gaga is covering her breasts with her hands. The picture is black and white and the shadows and posture, as well as facial expression, create a very extraordinary and extravagant look, so natural an usual for Lady Gaga and her fans.
  2. The big red "L" - which obviously stand for "Lady" and is a background for the text. The red colour of a letter echoes the masthead of the magazine and it's colours (the white "Q" in a red square). It is placed in a serif font same as two drop caps. It is the only colourful text on the page and makes a very good bright accent. A big red letter on the background tends to be a common feature and a brand identity of the magazine as it is seen in other issues of the Q magazine.
Generally the page is quite simple and modern. There is a clear division between the image and the interview and the picture doesn't bleed over the page. There is no heading at the page except for the name of the artist which is written in two different styles. "Lady" is written in the lower case handwritten-like font and "Gaga" is in bold upper case serif letters which highlights the fact that her alias was created by two words put together.
In the bottom right the musthead and the page number is placed as well as the date of issue. In the opposite corner the website of the online version of the magazine is printed. The text of the interview is framed in a way by the two lines at the top and the bottom of the page.
The text itself overlays the red letter "L" making it a background. The text unusually starts with a small font however has two drop caps in the next paragraphs in serif font. There are supposed to be 6 columns on this double spread page however the picture took half of it and so there are only three columns left for the text. The text itself reflects very "mental" character of Lady Gaga. The text has taboo language and magazine prints it as it is. There are no actual questions in the interview and the journalist narrates the text, adding Lady Gaga's quotes from time to time. The text also mentions a lot of public events with the artist. The contents of the text link to the picture and artist herself, as it is very open, sexual and crazy.
The text is structured quite good as each new paragraph opens a new theme and also almost all the information is in chronological order. It is quite hard to read the text as it is small, however you can see the clear division between the narrator and the artist response.

Overall it shows the magazine being quite honest with the readers and trying to show famous people from an interesting perspective and original angle.
